I needed three activities for a church lock-in, and when I wasn’t thinking too hard God gave me one, just as He always does.
Ten Commandments Scavenger Hunt
After Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments in hand, he was shocked to see the Israelites partying and worshipping before a golden calf, which they themselves had made. Enraged, Moses chucked those tablets of stone to the ground, brea. Now it’s up to two teams of Israelites to piece those broken tablets back together.
What You will need:
- Bible
- Box cutter
- Pencil
- Sharpees
- Two 20 x 30 white foam boards
- Ruler and any other tracing item
Make yourself two sets of tablets out of foam cardboard. Using a ruler and any good tracing tool to trace two tablets.
In order of the Ten Commandments, write down five laws per tablet. Don’t be ashamed if you don’t remember which goes in order. That’s what the Bible is for. One set of tablets should set should be written in one color and the other in another color. I went with red and blue.

I recommend using a box cutter to cut the tablets, as they are stronger than scissors and are less likely to bend the foam board.
After you have the tablets cut out, go ahead and cut each tablet into five pieces.

Scatter the broken tablets throughout the building you will be holding the scavenger hunt in. It can be anywhere- from the fake plants on the walls to the top of bookshelves. I don’t recommend placing these pieces in the church baptismal, restrooms, electrical rooms, or any room with a lock or danger sign.

Game time! Have participants split up into teams. Explain which colored set of tablets belongs to them. Depending on the size of the building and the size of both teams, I recommend giving participants at least twenty minutes to locate the pieces and reassemble them. The first time to piece together their tablets is the winner.
The youth and adults of my congregation appeared to enjoy themselves searching high and low for the tablet pieces. It is a good activity for those who are new to the Bible as well as those who need a refresher on what the laws of God are, what order they go in, and what these laws mean to them.
Be Well. Be Groovy. Have fun!
