Serene Saturday #1

Hello, my friends. As you may have noticed there was no post last night about how my week went. I am sorry to those of you who keep up with my weekly reflections, but I’m putting a stop to them…..and moving them to Saturday.

Why the switch in days? (1) Most Friday evenings I come home beat from work. Mostly what I want to do after 9 o’clock is peel off the uniform and lay flat in my queen sized bed. I don’t feel like my writing is at it’s best when I’m half asleep. I don’t think it’s fair to you. (2) I never share about about my Saturdays! It makes it appear as if the seventh day is some big secret, or something I’m afraid to talk about. On the contrary, my Saturdays are actually worth sharing. They’re actually quite serene. So from here on out, instead of Calm Friday Night, look forward to…

All week like any other week it’s been work, work, work. Cue the Rihanna song. As for my workout, I only went to the gym twice this week because I had others matters to tend to, and I wanted to give my hand time to heal after cutting it on a pan. How does one do that- sharp edges. 

As I mentioned earlier this week, I wanted to take some time away from blogging to finish a book, and I’m happy to say that it is finito. I will have a short book review up later. I don’t know what it is, but just something about holding a book and brushing through the pages, eyes gazing at every line just does it for me. The book I chose to read was “Hero of Hacksaw Ridge” by Booton Herdon, the true story of army medic/ Seventh Day Adventist Desmond Doss. In the story, Doss endures everything from harsh words uttered by his fellow soldiers to heavy fire and casualties of war. Through all those thorns, he still finds a way to uphold his faith and love for the Lord. He was such a firm believer, that he refused to kill, refusing so much as to carry a weapon. 

Reading about Doss made me wonder about all those other Christians enlisted in the Navy, Army, Marines, and Airforce. Do they believe in upholding the Sixth Commandment- “Thou Shalt Not Kill.”? When somebody is coming at you with the intent to end you, would you be prepared to end them first?

This Sabbath, I went to church wearing my cobalt blue stripped suit, which I bought last Friday from GQ Fashions.

Call me a fashion bug if you want, but a nice pair of clothes puts a smile on my face. A deacon gotta look good.👀 I don’t just like wearing nice church clothes; I like dressing nice/decent in general. One thing I can’t stand is when guys have their pants hanging off their butts. At what point in time did this become cool? C’mon fellas. If you’re trying to impress the ladies with your backside, more than likely they’ll be repulsed by your dirty drawers. 

This morning at church, I was requested by church member to sing a song for special music for her. Even though my voice probably isn’t where it should be in the early morning, I am always willing to lend my voice for God. I’m sometimes referred to as God’s Minute Man because I will minister through song even when I’m requested at the last minute. The song selection was “Pass It On” by Kurt Kaiser, one of my favorites. I felt this song was appropriate for the springtime because of the second stanza, which goes,

“What a wondrous time is spring 

When all the trees are budding

The birds begin to sing

The flowers start their blooming

That’s how it is with God’s love

Once you’ve experienced it

You want to sing it’s fresh like spring

You want to pass it on”(Pass It On”)

God’s love truly is fresh like the ever blooming spring season. His love is so perfect that you want to pass it onto others. 

This week as a whole I was reminded that it is the simple things in life such as reading a book, wearing nice clothes, and singing a song that make me happy. It just goes to show you, whenever you’re having a rough time, it is the simple things, even so much as having another person smile at you, that can ease your soul.
