Good Friday evening everyone, or if you’re reading this some other time, good day to you. I hope you had a good week. At this time I’m more than happy to be in the sanctuary that is my room. My work shoes are resting in the closet and my black unifrom has been replaced by sky blue pajamas. I always look forward to Friday nights.
When I was much younger, I didn’t always appreciate them as much as I do now. Why, because in our household, Friday night was the Sabbath. For those unfamiliar with what this is, the Sabbath(for Jews and Adventists) is a time of religious observance from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. You can imagine how unfun it was not being able to indulge in those things I would normally do throughout the week. Like for example, I couldn’t go to a bulk of my school dances because they were all on Friday nights. Why can’t you just have them on Saturday like every other school does, I thought.
Now that I’m older; free from peer pressure; and work full time, I do appreciate the time to just relax. What do I do during Fridays.
Listen to Christian music. Everything from energetic gospel choirs to peaceful instrumental hymn music fills my ears on calm Friday evenings. Music and singing will forever be one of my escapes from the traps of the world.
Write in my journal. I’m ashamed to say that I have been slacking on this. When you work five days a week and nothing else happens, you don’t exactly want to write about taking out the trash; mopping floors; and getting dishwater on your pants. Don’t worry. My life is not all work and no pleasure. I mean I got my own blog!
Do my Sabbath school lesson. As I mentioned in a previous post, I don’t do it every day line I should. There is no better time to get caught up than during this time.
Lay in bed. The Sabbath is also a time to rest. That queen sized bed in my room might as well be a coffin because after a few minutes I am like a corpse.
Reflect on my week. Let’s see what’s on my mind this time.
- I definitely want to upgrade to a new pair of glasses I tried on this week.

(Yep these are the ones I want.)
- I have good coworkers. Every now and then, those who work the night shift at my job will lend a hand by putting up dishes as I continue to wash pots and pans and clean off trays. And I don’t even have to ask. I always say thank you, and as I’m leaving the job site, I ask God to bless them for all their help.
- I worked on my taxes for the first time this week. Definitely something to keep saved in my mind. Nothing to it, as most of you know. It’s just a matter of reading, adding and rounding. That was a relief to know because those math classes in high school might as well have been rocket science.
- I shouldn’t let myself get too worked up about certain things, like my printer not printing and pretty much giving me the middle finger. Like all those other times I got angry, frustrated, or worried about something, I just ended up smiling and laughing about it later because of how small the matter seeemed.
So what do you do on Friday nights. Feel free to share! Im curious. Have a good evening, and as we say in my faith, Happy Sabbath.
